Home Inspection Associations – Reasons to join one

Home Inspection Associations are probably the second thing I learned about when I started my training. The first thing I learned was that there was so much I needed to learn!

All new inspectors need to decide whether they are going to join an association. My training program was open about the specific association they recommend, but it didn’t take me long to realize that not all inspectors recommended the same association.

One Industry – Many Associations

There are multiple home inspection associations out there. The following are just a few of the commonly known associations: ASHI, InterNACHI, NYSAHI, NIBI, NSHI,  HIF, ISHINABIE. There are also multiple regional and State specific associations.

Now, there are only a few things in this world that would get a group of inspectors madder than a rabid racoon trapped in a crawlspace (or hornets in an attic). The debate about which association is ‘better’  is one of those things. Like the inspector slowly crawling backwards to exit the crawlspace, I will back away from that question (at least for now) and rather focus on the reasons why association membership is something to consider.

Reasons to Belong

To be fair, there are many inspectors who do not belong to an association; and some who belong to multiple associations. Your decision regarding association membership(s) will ultimately be a personal and business decision. Since the dues for most associations are significant, make sure that whatever you decide, your chosen association provides the majority, if not all, of the benefits below. I can write a full post on each on these benefits, but as an introduction to the issue, a summary will have to suffice. Typical association benefits should include:

  • Continuing education – Helping you stay up to date with developments in the field.
  • Local chapter meetings or group meet-ups – Supporting your networking and educational goals
  • Online directory – Enabling clients to find your business online
  • Certification program –  Acknowledging your experience, level of expertise or additional certifications
  • Assistance with exam prep – Valuable when preparing for state or national exams
  • A Standard of Practice – To guide your work, clarify your responsibilities and help educate clients
  • Publications – Regular publications, printed and online, with useful and interesting articles and resources
  • Free resources – Education and advice regarding report writing, liability insurance and business development
  • Trade discounts – Making insurance, tools, books, and marketing materials more affordable.

When I had to decide on an association I knew I needed a network of inspectors, willing assist me as I learned about this industry, the risks and the many rewards it has to offer.

If you are a proud member of a specific association, please share your reasons why membership is important below. Also feel free to add your business to our directory free of charge.
